AFK Exam Preparation — NDEB Equivalency Process

The NDEB Equivalency Process — 3 stages
The AFK is Stage 1 of a three-stage process. Understanding all three stages helps you plan your full pathway to Canadian dental licensure — not just the immediate examination.
AFK — Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge
You are here200-question computer-based written exam. Tests biomedical and applied clinical dental sciences. Held twice per year (Feb & Aug). Maximum 3 attempts.
ACJ — Assessment of Clinical Judgement
Written examination testing clinical decision-making, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Held once per year. Requires AFK pass to apply.
NDECC — National Dental Examining Board Clinical Examination
Practical clinical skills assessment on a manikin. Tests operative and prosthodontic procedures. Requires ACJ pass to apply.

What the AFK tests
The AFK is a 200-question multiple-choice examination testing biomedical and applied clinical dental sciences. It is designed to find candidates who have gaps — the questions test precise, topic-level knowledge, not broad familiarity. A question on pharmacology does not simply ask what amoxicillin is. It asks which specific patients require prophylaxis, at what dose, and what the correct alternative is when that option is contraindicated.
