INBDE Exam Preparation — Integrated National Board Dental Examination
The INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Examination) is administered by JCNDE and is required for dental licensure in the United States. It replaced the NBDE Part I and Part II. This guide explains the exam structure, what it tests, and how DentistUP supports your preparation.

INBDE — single integrated examination
Unlike the previous NBDE which had two separate parts, the INBDE is a single two-day integrated examination. It tests biomedical and clinical dental sciences simultaneously through an integrated format. There is no separate Part 2 clinical examination — state dental boards have their own clinical licensing requirements after passing the INBDE.
Day 1 — Integrated written examination
Multiple-choice questions in an integrated format. Patient Box questions provide clinical case information linked to 3–5 questions each. Tests biomedical and clinical sciences simultaneously.
Day 2 — Integrated written examination (continued)
Continuation of the integrated written exam. Both days together form the single INBDE assessment. Exam fee: approximately $845 USD (2025 — verify with ADA).
State clinical licensing examination
After passing the INBDE, dentists must pass a state-accepted clinical examination for full licensure. Requirements vary by state — check your target state dental board.
The Patient Box format
The INBDE uses a Patient Box format unique to this examination. A Patient Box presents complete clinical case information — patient history, examination findings, radiographs, and relevant test results — followed by multiple questions that all draw on that same clinical context. Each question within a Patient Box must be answered using only the information provided in that box.
This format tests integrated clinical reasoning — the ability to synthesise information from multiple disciplines simultaneously to make clinical decisions — rather than isolated factual recall. Candidates who prepare only through isolated subject questions often find the integration required by Patient Box questions more challenging than expected.
